Five Simple Steps to Choosing a Sewing Machine

Have you been thinking of getting a sewing machine but not sure what to look out for, given the many different brand names, styles, models and prices available nowadays? It's understandable. After all, the sewing machine is among the most expensive item you'll probably buy for your sewing room and hence it's natural to feel a little anxious and lost with all the information available.

To help you with that, here are some rules of thumb to consider when picking an appropriate sewing machine:

(1) Decide What's You're Going To Use The Sewing Machine For

Ask yourself, what do you intend to use the sewing machine for? Is it for producing new shirts for your hubby, designing blankets for the baby or embroidering elaborate designs on your new hankies? Whatever your specific rationale may be, always remember this. Sewing machines are created for various functions and purchasing one that fulfil your wants is the fundament of a wise buying decision. Don't get something just because your neighbour has one or you'll land up with a white elephant!

Besides that, take a look at the usable space available in your sewing room or the section of your household where you'll be the sewing machine. Is it large or modest? Are there electric ports available? This information will help you determine if you want a sewing machine that's electric, mechanical, computerised, small and neat or simply serge.

(2) Do Your Due Diligence On the Brands & Models Available

Once you've a general idea of what you probably want, inquire on the different brands or models of sewing machines which specializes in that. For instance, if embroidery's your thing, googling for that will point you to brand names such as Husqvarna Viking etc. Review the models they provide, their functions and naturally, the costs involved.

Take a look at some of the customer's feedback to see if there's anything particular to feel good or bad about a certain model.

(3) Agree On How Much You're Willing To Pay

By this time, you'll have a general idea of how much those machines that meet your wants, costs. Decide how much you can and are willing to pay. The price can range from less than $100 for a no frills, simple model to more than seven thousand bucks for an equipment that does almost everything except cutting out your fabric. Stay firm and don't fall into the trap of buying something because you think you "would" require them. Get something you know you'll unquestionably use once you fork out the cash!

(4) Try Out the Machine(s)

Shortlist a few sewing machines you may want to buy and setup a trial appointment with your nearest local dealer. Or with someone whom you know possesses the machine. Try out the stitches and functions that you'll be using with samples of fabric you work on most often.

Also remember to sound out your friend or the dealer about its endurance, proof of guarantee, ease of replacing machine components, cost of servicing, enhancement upgrades etc. If you're checking with a dealer, try confirming if they provide free sewing lessons as a bonus.

(5) Make The Purchase

Once you've determine which machine to get, making the purchase is the easiest part. You can buy it from your local dealer or online via reputed distributors. Some online distributors offer superb price cuts or bargains because of their lower adminstrative expenses. However, do ensure such cost savings are not eroded by an unjust return regulation or costly shipping charges. Know your rights and obligations so that you'll have a much satisfying online purchasing experience!
