Hair Removal

Hair is good and hair is bad. You may always dream of flowing, silky long mane but even a tiny hair on the armpits or on your legs is seriously unwanted and unsightly!

A few years ago the trend of hair removal was a domain reserved for models and actors, but today men and women from all walks of life are getting rid of unwanted body hair through temporary or permanent methods of hair removal depending on their requirement and budget.

Unwanted Body Hair

Hair grows on all areas of the human body except for palms of the hands, soles of the feet, the lips and certain areas of the genital structure. Most unwanted body hair is considered to be the hair that grows on armpits, the face, the abdomen, back, chest, legs and pubic area. Hair that grows in these areas is seen as unsightly in the modern society and considered for hair removal. The hair that grows on eyebrows and head are usually trimmed and not removed or shaved.

By current fashion trends, unwanted body hair is highly undesirable and must definitely be removed, whatever is the cost and the pain. This obsession for removing unwanted body hair has led to the development of various methods of temporary (short-term) and permanent (long lasting) hair removal.

Methods of hair removal can also be classified into depilation and epilation depending on the way the hair is removed from the skin -

  • Depilation – The visible hair is removed above the surface of the skin and not by the root. Common forms of depilation include shaving, use of chemical depilatories etc. This is a short term method of hair removal.

  • Epilation – This means removal of entire hair, from its root below the skin. Epilation can be temporary such as hair removal through waxing, sugaring, tweezing, threading, electric epilators etc and permanent through laser, photo epilation, electrolysis etc.

Facial Hair Removal

Apart from acne and pimples, facial hair in a woman is one among the prime concerns bothering the facial appearance. It is considered a definite obstruction in achieving a clear and flawless skin and beauty obsessed women are ready to bear any price and pain to get rid of this embarrassing problem.

Some of the temporary and widely used methods to achieve facial hair removal include – bleaching, waxing and sugaring. Hair removal products such as creams, lotions and mousses are other options for removal of unwanted facial hair. Shaving is never recommended for facial hair removal in women.

Since women everywhere find facial hair an embarrassing issue many are now going in for expensive and often painful permanent hair removal solutions such as electrolysis and laser facial hair removal treatment.

Permanent Hair Removal

Demand for permanent hair removal treatment is soaring by the day as more women and also men are obsessed with the idea of smooth, flawless skin with no fuzz at all. To suit the fancy of modern society that finds body hair unsightly several less than perfect methods of permanent hair removal have been developed which are long lasting if not permanent. A number of these methods use chemicals, energy of varying types, or a combination to target the areas that regulate hair growth. Some of the most popular methods of permanent hair removal include –

  • Laser hair removal – This popular method of hair removal is considered safe if properly executed. It targets the pigment in the hair and causes damage to the hair follicle while sparing the surrounding tissue. This method is expensive and painful.

  • Electrolysis (electrology) – This method is clinically safe and effective but can be painful and expensive. It uses electric current to damage the areas that generate hair.

  • Intense Pulsed Light (Flashlamp) – This process damages hair follicles to achieve hair removal. It has delivered fairly successful results, but has been found to be ineffective on un-pigmented hair, and even on red and blonde hairs.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses laser light (an intense, pulsating beam of light) to remove unwanted hair. The efficacy of laser hair removal is now generally accepted in the dermatology community, and laser hair removal is widely practiced.

Although laser hair removal doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal, it does extend the hair-free period, which can vary from several months to many years. New hair growth may be finer and lighter in color. In some cases, new hair may grow in areas adjacent to the treated areas. With multiple treatments, long-term hair removal is possible. Common treatment locations include legs, armpits, upper lip, chin and bikini line.

Hair color and skin type are the key factors that influence the success of laser hair removal. It's most successful on people with dark hair (brown or black) and light skin. Laser hair removal does not work for white, blonde, light brown or light red hair.

The disadvantages of laser hair removal are that it can be painful, expensive, and improper treatments can cause burns, skin discoloration, and patchy re-growth. To reduce your risks, choose a qualified and experienced doctor
