Let's Gift

By: Kim Meyer

A, B, C of Corporate gifts or business Gifts

Corporate or business gift are presented on special occasions such as anniversaries etc., to the most valuable employees and most valuable customers. To be simple, a corporate gift is some thing that is given to show the gratitude.

By keeping the above description in mind one can say that a corporate gift must contain two important qualities. 1) It must at par with the company’s brand and market value. It must help the new people to decide the stature of the company. 2) It must show how company values its relationship with the receiver.

One must remember that these business/corporate gifts are the ways to build a strong relationship. Actually the gifts in our personal life also serve the same purpose. So, all the rules that apply to the selection of a personal gift, will apply to the selection of a corporate gift. The only difference is number. In personal life you will buy a few gifts at a time. But business gifts are bought in large numbers.

The number of corporate gifts must not increase a certain limit because then the gifts will not reflect the idea of “the most valued relation” and then they may yield negative results in long time. Here we have to clearly differentiate between a corporate gift and a promotional gift. The former is given as a token of valued relationship where as the later is distributed to popularize the company. The corporate gifts will be given a few people and are valuable; where as the promotional gifts will be given to any one who can be treated as a potential customer. In other words promotional items/gifts are given to new/potential customers for building a new relation where as corporate gifts are given to appreciate/thank the old business relationship.

By this we understand that both promotional gifts and corporate gifts came under marketing strategy of a company but at different levels. Naturally different selection procedure must be followed in choosing these gifts.

A corporate gift is a two edged sword. A thoughtful gift will cement the business relations and increase the brand value of the company in the receiver’s mind; where as a thoughtless or wrong gift may wound a valuable relation.

The questions to be asked before selecting a corporate gift are
“Will it be useful to the customer in his professional life?”
“Will it reflect the latest trend/fashion?”
“Will the receiver feel proud to use it or display it in public?”
“Will it render respect to company when the receiver uses it?”

The final points to be noted are the quality, price and number. The customer service department or the personal department of a company can help to decide the number of gifts needed. Then fix your budget. Ask your supplier for a sample or chance to return back if you are not satisfied. If these options are not available then the selection team must visit the shop before you sign your check.
